Replacing Ezekiel Elliott Major Hurdle For Cowboys

0

The Cowboys had their first practice without Ezekiel Elliott on Monday, August 14, 2017. Ezekiel Elliott is the running back for the Dallas Cowboys. Elliott was given a six game suspension on August 11, 2017, after violating the leagues personal conduct policy. Fans were heard chanting “Free Zeke” at Monday’s practice. Accusations were made against Elliott for domestic violence against his former girlfriend.

The head coach (Jason Garrett) addressed the situation regarding Ezekiel Elliott with the team. Since then, Ezekiel has denied the accusations and filed his appeal on August 15, 2017. Other running backs for the Cowboys spoke with one another and are now aware that they must step up to fill Elliott’s position. Ezekiel was seen at the Cowboy’s practice on Monday and was going about his business and displaying positive energy.

The Cowboy’s quarterback Dak Prescott made a statement that a lot could change without Elliott’s ability to run the ball. He also stated that if the offensive line and the wide receivers create their formulas, they will have the ability to execute the plays. As long as Prescott is aware of the plays, he said that there should be no problem being able to run them down the field. The Cowboy’s addressed the importance on staying healthy and dominant while Elliott is out.

The suspension is currently for six weeks. The Cowboy’s bye week falls on week 6, which means that Elliott can’t return until week 8 on October 29, 2017, to pick up the season playing the Washington Redskins. This is said to add on to the problem since the first four games are against teams who have finished within the top 10 defenses last season. With Ezekiel Elliott’s absence, the majority of the work will fall on McFadden and Morris. McFadden believes that he can do anything that his team expects from him physically; however, McFadden was out the last 13 games last season with an elbow injury.

The Cowboys have stated that things will get harder for Prescott defensively with Elliott out. Prescott has completed 72% of his passes with Elliott on the field. He has completed only 60% of his passes without Elliott. The coaches believe that Prescott will have the ability to use his legs during the time that Ezekiel is out; although, it doesn’t appear that the coaches will design plays specifically for Prescott to run. The Cowboy’s success will be determined on their ability to make some adjustments offensively.
